i really love....chambray on denim

I wasn't so sure about wearing chambray with denim because I was afraid I would end up looking more Britney and Justin than chic.  Although, can we all just take a minute to pour some out for the power couple that was Britney and Justin. *moment of silence* Through much trial and error, I landed on the looks above and am embracing the double denim look.

STYLE TIP #1: 

Wear two very different shades of chambray and denim. Wear the same color denim if you wan't to go the route of the canadian tuxedo although I would discourage you from that.

STYLE TIP #2:

Break up the pairing by wearing distressed denim or a textured chambray. Or both like I did with my favorite leopard print chambray from Aeropostale.

STYLE TIP #3:

Separate the denim and chambray by tucking in the chambray (or doing the j.crew half tuck) and wearing a bold belt.

I spent last week at home in San Francisco with Aaron beforeheading to Boston for a quick 36 hours. It was the first time in two years we were able to go back to California together which made the week all the more special. Aaron and I met in through friends that live about an hour and half north of San Francisco so while he’s been to SF a few times, we haven’t had a whole lot of opportunity for me to share with him my city. You know like my favorite coffee shop, where to get the best burrito, where I learned how to drive, or where my first job was. I’ve been feeling really nostalgic lately so being able to visit and share those places with Aaron made the week that much better.

SF is just plain FUN too. We ate and drank well, toured theamazing Airbnb offices thanks to a friend, watched some baseball and visited our college best friends. Being at home is both settling and re-energizing at the same time, which is exactly what we both needed after our busy summers at work.

I've completely given up on posting on Monday's. Please forgive me.

You may have seen on instagram but I was in Burlington, Vermont last week for a work conference at the University of Vermont! The conference itself was meh, the takeaways were meh and we slept in the dorms which was --not surprisingly-- meh too. But boy, was Burlington spectacular. 

It is remarkable what a breath of fresh air (literally and figuratively) will do for the soul. I got on that plane to Vermont tired, worn out and truthfully a bit dejected from work and  DC. The thought of hitting the road again to spend five days living out of my suitcase in a dorm was less than appealing. Until I stepped out of the airport and took a deep breath. The air in Burlington is crisp, it's fresh, it's cool and it doesn't smack you in the chest like the humid air of city life does. It's not an exaggeration when I say I instantly felt refreshed after breathing in some good ol' fashioned fresh air. It's hard to not feel relaxed when you're surrounded by mountainous air and stunning views. Burlington is b-e-a-u-tiful.

Burlington also reminded me a lot of the smaller towns in Northern California. The people were laid back, friendly and seem to know how to live well. The food was delicious, the shopping was great and we definitely took advantage of the fun nightlife. It was low key, unpretentious and made me really look forward to my trip home in a few weeks.

Oh and then there's Ben and Jerry's. What's not to love about Ben and Jerry's?

And you know what, the dorms weren't so bad. Somehow a twin bed and shitty cafeteria food can make you both miss college and appreciate your life at 28 at the exact same time.

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a nice weekend. It was seriously beautiful in DC this weekend and while it may not have reached spring-like temperatures, the sunshine was such a nice break from all this grey, dark and snowy winter we've been having. I am instantly in a better mood when it's sunny out. Spoken like a true California native...

This is really sappy (and might make your eyes roll) but Aaron is headed to New York this week for a father/sons trip with his best friend and their dads (cute, right?) and I'm feeling a bit selfish by being pretty bummed I won't see him this week. I'm trying not to be and focus instead on being grateful for being able to spend time with both him and his dad this past weekend. It's tough not seeing family as often as we would like, being as how most of our family is out west, so weekend visits are all the more special. My mama is coming next week for a week long visit  and I might explode with excitement!

Ah, another snow day is upon us. As excited as I was for snow a few months ago, I am O-V-E-R over it now. I am so freaking tired of the snow. And the cold. And the wind. And always being so bundled up I look like Randy. It's just not cute anymore. NOW I get why people on the east coast take so many vacations in February. Spring cannot come fast enough. 

I'm assuming you all watched the Oscars last night? I'm watching this morning so I can fast forward through all the boring awards the commercials. I did however do plenty of red carpet watching last night and am already anticipating how we'll be seeing the red carpet styles translate to every day trends. We're already seeing a lot of powder blue and I'm sure that won't slow down after Lupita Nyong'o dress last night. [Side note: we can all agree she's been the best dressed this award season right?] I think we'll be seeing a lot more people wearing necklaces backwards like J.Law and a lot of navy which I'm pleased about. Thank you Amy,  Sandra and Ellen. Oh and then Ellen crushed it in winter white. Bravo, Ellen! PS- WHERE can I get a sparkly navy blazer? I obviously need one stat.

But the real winner? JARED LETO'S HAIR. I think I should just bring a picture of his ombre next time I get my hair done.

[closet obsessions] hoping I don't regret this one..

I ordered this skirt during one of the last JCrew Factory 2491755% off everything sales (ok, it was only 40%) and when it came, one of the very first things I thought was oh I can't wait to wear this skirt in a blog post! Then I realized shortly thereafter after thinking about it for awhile, that was pretty shallow of me. So I'm clearly still posting about the skirt but to balance it out, here are 5 embarrassing things I can't believe I'm posting on the internet.

In no particular order....

1. I've cried during the Bachelor (more than once).

2. I'm a shameless spray tanner and I make Aaron spray my back with tanner days before I know I'll be wearing an open back top.

3. I was 16 when I had my first kiss. (I CANNOT believe I just put that on the internet. All in the name of showing off a cute new skirt I suppose..)

4. My AIM screen name in high school was dancemonkey708

5. I was Hello Kitty for halloween...3 years ago.
